» About ASA Swimming
Another of the main activities of the
Association is Swimming which has been established as part of the aquatic
sports calendar since the Associations existence.
The swimming activities of the Association
are run by a Swimming Board which is made up of representatives of clubs
which participate in the sport. The Chairman of the Board is also the
ASA Vice-President Swimming.
Age-Group meetings are held monthly and the
National Swimming Championships are organized in June or July of every
year. The swimmers who form
part of the National Team, as well as other promising swimmers,
participate in swim meets aboard on a regular basis. Since 1994, the ASA has also
organized an International Age-Group Swimming Meeting on the week-end
after Easter every year and this has not only become a regular feature of
the Associations calendar but is also eagerly awaited by the foreign
clubs which regularly participate in it.
For the National Squad, the ultimate
objective is their participation in the Games of the Small States of
Europe, where Malta has won a number of medals. Swimmers prepare for their
participation in these games by attending twice-daily sessions of training
six times a week. These
sessions in the water are supplemented by gym sessions to make sure the
preparation is appropriate.

Maltese swimmers have also participated in
the Olympic Games number of
times, since male and a female swimmer are invited to participate in very
edition. Unfortunately, the
standard of Maltese swimming does not allow the swimmers to aspire to
medal-winning at this level. However, Maltese swimmers are a valuable presence at these
prestigious events, seeking always to better their time and to represent
their country with pride.
The ASA engages a full-time coach who is
responsible for coaching the National Squad and promoting swimming amongst
Maltese youths. The latter is
done in close collaboration with the Swimming Promotion Unit within the
Department of Education. The National Coach is ably assisted by a
part-time coach for the younger members of the B Squad who represent the
future of Swimming in Malta.
