Malta Waterpolo History

One of the principal activities of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malt is the organization of water polo in Malta. The ASA organizes water polo competitions for males and females from junior to senior levels. The National water polo teams are also the responsibility of the Association. The ASA also organizes coaching and refereeing courses.

The senior National water polo team participates regularly in the LEN European ‘B’ water polo championships and in various international tournaments both in Malta and abroad, Malta also participates in the yearly COMEN water polo cup. The Association has also organized the European Junior Water Polo Championships in Malta in 1985 and the European ‘B’ water polo championships in 1996 and 2000.

Maltese clubs participate in the European Club competitions organized by LEN. Considering our small size and limited resources, the result achieved are quite satisfactory.

The main water polo competitions are organized yearly. The major competition is the National Championships that are held during the summer months. These competitions consist of a Division 1 and Division II league preceded by a preliminary round to determine the participants’ division. Knock-Out competitions are organized for the clubs of each division. Another league competition for seniors only is organized in winter. Competitions for ladies, juniors and all other age-groups are played in summer. All Official matches except those in connection with the younger age-groups are played at the National Pool.

Championships are keenly contested and are followed by sizeable crowds. Italian referees and local referees control matches of the top division. A number of Maltese referees are qualified LEN and FINA referees and they are appointed to control international matches.
